School Activities

Students at Hervey Bay Special School commenced the GymZOOnasium exercise program in January 2016 after staff were treated to Professional Development with the wonderfully talented Emma. The GymZOOnasium program enables our students to engage in physical activity which is fun and creative and that allows them to challenge themselves. Students at our school have a wide range of disabilities and many present with high and complex support needs. GymZOOnasium has encouraged our students to be active and to use their bodies in ways they may have not before – the program provides them with opportunities to achieve physical fitness in a fun and creative way.
GymZOOnasium is an "animal-themed children's exercise program that is:
* Fun
* Inclusive
* Evidence-based
* Easy to facilitate
* Professionally developed (by Exercise Physiologists, in consultation with Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Teachers, Coaches, Parents & Children)
* Proven to improve children's strength, co-ordination, balance, gross motor skills and self esteem"

Students at Hervey Bay Special School participate in various swimming activities, from learn to swim to aqua aerobics. Students travel on the school bus to and from the Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre.
The Snoezelen Room at Hervey Bay Special School is a purpose built learning environment that has been designed to meet the sensory needs of our students. The room enables our students to explore the environment using various multisensory pieces of equipment that assist in developing their tolerance for certain sensory experiences or which they seek for enjoyment. Our room hosts many wonderful and exciting pieces including an interactive bubble tube, tactile walls and interactive panels, fibre optic cables and a projector which casts images around the room.
