Hervey Bay Special School

Hervey Bay Special School is located in the beautiful Fraser Coast area. Our school delivers a range of distinctive educational programs that represent best practice for students from Prep to Year 12 with intellectual disability and other significant disabilities, who require significant adjustments and modifications to meet their specific learning needs. Our school has a current focus on increasing the communication capabilities of our students and increasing staff capacity to deliver the Australian Curriculum, with a strong focus on Literacy and Numeracy.

A diagnosis of intellectual disability is a requirement for enrolment in a state special school. Enrolment at Hervey Bay Special School is managed through a formal Education Queensland process.
The school is divided into four junctures: Early Years (P-2), Primary (3-6), Secondary (7-9), and Senior (10 -12). Each Juncture has an emphasis on implementing age appropriate learning opportunities founded on the Australian Curriculum and in Senior we specifically cater for senior students through Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority / QCIA processes. Learning takes place within a variety of teaching contexts, including learning opportunities within the local community.

At Hervey Bay Special School, we aim to develop and promote each child's potential and level of independence through learning programs developed in response to individual needs in partnership with families and care providers. Supports may include the use of targeted strategies such as Augmented and Alternate Communication (AAC) systems, therapy activities, individualised behaviour planning, or the use of adaptive technology.

Learning opportunities for students are planned so that they are both age-equivalent and pitched at a challenging but achievable level for each student. The school provides a safe and supportive learning environment where every student can experience success every day. We take pride in being a Positive Behaviour for Learning School, demonstrating a strong focus on positive behaviour support, promoting the personal and social development of our students.

The school is committed to working with families and caregivers of our students and we value them as important partners in assisting our students to achieve their learning goals. We also work closely with other organisations that support the learning and wellbeing of our students.
